Landscaping an uneven lawn to level in Lodi

When you have a lawn that is old there can be some places that have become uneven, like sink holes, holes dug by animals and people, drainage issues, broken water lines and various natural causes.  If you want to have a more beautiful yard to enjoy then you will need to level out the lawn.  In some cases you can just add some topsoil mix of compost, sand and dirt/soil.  This is a good way to even out a lawn in Lodi California that has extensive unevenness if it is not very deep. In some cases you may have to apply many applications of topsoil mix to fill everything out evenly.  In the worst case scenario you will have to fill in deeper holes with soil and plant new seeds on the areas you filled in.  In the case that you have some water leaking and there is an uneven spot forming where the water is leaking you will most likely need to dig this area up to replace a busted pipe.  Many pipes these days are made of plastic and can break if you dig near them.  So you might need a professional Landscaper in Lodi or maybe even a plumber to repair the leaking water.  After the water leak is repaired you can fill in the hole with soil and reseed the area.

Dressing the lawn with Topsoil

Get a wheelbarrow or even better a cement mixer, and mix a batch of soil. You will want to mix everything fully with a shovel or let the mixer run long enough that everything is fully mixed.

  1. Now you will put about a half of an inch of soil mix on top of all Spreading out a layer of topsoil over your uneven lawn will level it out and you will want to have the right mix of soil to make sure that your lawn stays and grows healthy.  The soil mix for lawns in Lodi should be a mix of soil, compost and fine sand.  Clean Dirt is an oxymoron but you don’t want you soil to have too much debris from plants that could hinder the grasses growth. A good mix of soil should contain 40% topsoil, 40% Sand, 20% compost.  The sand is really important so that the roots can easily penetrate the soil and it gives drainage. Lawn Surgery

Cutting a small patch of lawn out so you can fill in the area is a little like surgery for plants that is as because you will be cutting the plants roots out from underneath them so that the patch can be raised up and some soil put underneath it to fill in the depressed area.  You can do this in small areas with healthy growths of grass that are lower than you would like.

A good way to do this (surgery) is to cut the lawn outlining the sunken area with a good flat spade.  Sometimes referred to as cement shovels.  This will cut out a perfect square patch.  You can cut as many patches as necessary until you have cut out the whole sinking area.

Be gentle and take care not to harm the roots and set the patch to the side.  Now spread layers of soil mix or potting soil to level out the patch that is not even or sunken in.  You will need to water the soil lightly to remove any air pockets.  That will stop the lawn from settling into another uneven spot. Now you can replace the turf patch.  Just place the patch onto of the soil mix and lightly tamp it down with your foot or your hands.  Now water it regularly until it grows the roots back.  It will need close watch to make sure it does not dry out as the roots spread down into the newly leveled area.

Leveling Deep sink holes

When you have areas of uneven lawn and the holes are deeper than 1 or 2 inches you are going to need to fill in the holes with a good soil mix rather than trying to level it out by applying a dressing to top.  Dressing the top will take too many applications and you will waste too much time keeping the grass alive rather than just planting new seeds and having them grow.

The secret to leveling out a deep hole in your lawn is to compact the new soil mix as you fill the hole and use some water to help the soil mix settle in as you are filling the hole.  Otherwise if you don’t compact the soil before planting the new seed the soil will settle in and become uneven and leave your yard looking a little wonky.  You will want to walk on the soil to compact it before you add the new seed.  After it is compacted put a spade of loose soil on top and spread the loose seed over the top of it.  Now give it some water regularly and voila you have a nice repair done that looks great once the grass seed grows in.
