Some projects may not require the expertise of a professional landscaper.
How can I go about creating a beautiful yard? There are so many things to consider, like skills, time, purpose of the space, etc… but there are some things you can do pretty easily to really spruce up your yard and make the place really enjoyable all year round. Here in the San Joaquin County even in winter there are some really beautiful days outside to be enjoyed especially if you have a great landscape design to enrich or even inspire you to spend more time outdoors.
Overall
So for the overall objective to be met you have to realize that you want to create an interesting space all year round because different plants bloom in different seasons, therefore if you don’t have anything that is in bloom, or at least green, you may not have anything interesting going on in your yard at certain times of the year. The idea is to have some flowering trees and shrubs to give color in the spring and summer then the deciduous foliage will fall in the autumn creating some beautiful red and orange color and when winter comes you will still have some good evergreens foliage giving some interesting color for the winter.
Tip #1
One easy thing you can do for improving the landscape would be to layer your flower beds. You can accomplish this yourself by layering your flowers in arrangements of 3 rows. You want to put the tallest plants in the back row, against the wall or fence, a middle row with the next tallest plants, and the third row that will have the smallest plants in the front. Place this same arrangement of plants in different areas to create a unified design.
Tip#2
When doing your own landscape project at home don’t forget to use evergreen trees and shrubs. There are some very beautiful evergreens available to use such as an Italian dwarf cedar. These trees can be arranged in a line to create wall of green that is useful for barriers and privacy. Another great evergreen is the live oak. The live oak is native to San Joaquin County and will be a great choice for some evergreen foliage if you have the space for it as this tree will grow very tall if given the opportunity.
While using lots of deciduous trees for adding interesting color arrangements don’t forget that that you will lose all those beautiful flowers and leaves in the winter. Make sure you have added that lovely evergreen structure to your landscape so there is always something going on in the yard that is interesting and beautiful.
Tip#3
Using annuals to add a splash of color and something interesting to your landscape in Lodi is a great tip that you can do yourself pretty easily. Even though you may already have some great blooms coming from your perennial bloomers, like roses for example, you could still supplement and enhance the colors of your yard by planting some rows of annual flowers to accent the colors of the perennials. You just have to pick the colors that will fit a reasonable color scheme in your own landscape design. That could be the part that is the most fun when you get to decide what colors you will make bloom.
Tip#4
By installing permanent landscape features you will form a structure, or foundation upon which you may build a colorful and interesting landscape for your yard. Some things you may be able to do for yourself is plant evergreens, or build a deck, and, or, a fence that will be a permanent feature of interest in the yard. You could add an arbor to frame a pathway or use a deck to provide an easy transition from yard to house. Having permanent landscape features is very important aspect of having an interesting and functional landscape design to create a beautiful yard.
Tip#5
A good way to create a beautiful yard is by using a good landscape design technique known as focal points. By adding a point of focus in your design you create a space that has a feature that attracts attention. A fountain, or a waterfall would be some good examples, also statutes are used in this way. When you have built a focal point you can arrange blooms and paths to lead to the focal point. This way you have a design that leads to an interesting space in the landscape that you can admire or show off.
